We would like to share some fantastic news with you all!!

On the 22nd December a baby girl was born to my Son Bob and Daughter in Law Caroline. Amy Sophia weighed in at 7lbs. The baby was 14 days late and had kept us waiting so long we thought we wouldn't see them over the Christmas holiday.They all arrived on the 28th to enjoy the festivities with us and it was a most wonderful Christmas present I have ever had.

On the 19th January Lina and Vigis became the proud parents of a little boy, weighing in at 7lbs 7ounces. Both Mum and baby are doing well and expected to be home very soon. I am sure Limonous will be thrilled to have his new brother home and apparently he was allowed to chose his name -Lucas.

On the 20th January in the early hours of the morning Mr & Mrs Jones became the proud grandparents to another little girl. Their son Lawrence and wife Gail had a beautiful daughter Coco, she weighed 9lb and 2 ounces. I am told Tegan and Poppy where very excited to welcome their baby sister home later in the day.

Front Garden under construction!

The Front Garden is now under construction and getting a fabulous new look and make over!

Piotr and his father have been working very hard for the last 2 weeks,in all weathers, drilling and lifting old slabs, removing walls and building new flower beds.

Just behind them our Brian has been doing the gardening, lifting out the old compost, cutting back shrubs, splitting plants and planting bulbs in the new beds and revamping the existing ones.

It is going to look great when it is finished, which I am told on good authority it will be another 2 weeks.

Festivities all over!

Well we can safely say that the festivities are now well and truly over,

but what a great time we all had!

Christmas was a big hit this year I don't think we have ever received so many lovely letters and thank you cards. The new Christmas Menus where the biggest talking point and everyone commented on the superb food that the Chefs had work so hard to produce.

New Year was really exciting and was like a real family event, the entertainers pulled out all the

stops to put on a fabulous show,

a big Thank You to all.

There was another Celebration held on the 18th December

our very own Suzanne got married to Richard and became Mrs Bartley -

Congratulations to you both!

I have never seen a bride so laid back in my life, nothing seemed to phase her and everything was done last minute! none of this booking flowers and cakes etc well in advance. It was a wonder she managed to get her wedding dress in time, but it all went very smoothly and they had a fantastic day.

We are still waiting for the photos so if I can get one for you to see I will post it later.

On the 2nd January the hotel closed down for a 2 week break, most of the staff went off

for their annual leave taking time out to visit the Sun! or meet up with family & friends.

During the shutdown a few of us continued to work and the spring cleaning took place,

everywhere is now spic and span and we reopened our doors on the 16th for our first guests of 2012.

The Christmas Cake you will be glad to know is now well under way, despite the sleepless nights I have had worrying over it!! Unfortunately I cant tell you what the design is, as that is now

TOP SECRET

The chefs work extremely hard this time of year especially with our Holly & Mistletoe breaks running from November through December, they have to cook Christmas Dinner twice a week and the smell of the Turkey cooking is sublime. The aromas of the turkey, mince pies and puddings etc waft up into the office and make our mouths water on a daily basis but unfortunately we never get to sample them

I popped down to the kitchen the other day and Simon one of our chefs was just bringing out a batch of delicious homemade shortbread. so I cheekily asked him for the recipe. With a lot of arm twisting he finally gave it to me so I thought you might like to try it and have a go of baking it yourself!

I made a batch over the weekend and they disappeared so fast I will now have to make some more.

Simon's Shortbread ( makes approx 16 biscuits)

8 oz Butter

4 oz Castor Ssugar

12 oz Flour

Preheat the oven to 325°F/170°C/Gas Mark 3.
In a large bowl cream together the butter and sugar. until light and fluffy and pale in colour. This can take at least 10 minutes. Alternatively use a food mixer.
Sieve the flour into the bowl of butter and sugar. Mix quickly and thoroughly to bring all the ingredients together but do not over mix.
Tip the mixture onto a lightly floured work surface and knead lightly and quickly to form a loose dough. then either:
Roll out the dough, prick the surface all over with a fork. Cut into desired shape or rounds using cookie cutters. Place the Scottish shortbread's on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 25 mins or until pale brown and crisp. Sprinkle the warm Scottish shortbread's with fine sugar and leave to cool on a wire cooling rack.
Alternatively grease a Swiss roll tin 9" x 13"/23 x 33cm with butter. Press the dough into the tin and press with your fingers to level the surface, prick all over with a fork. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown. With the shortbread still in the tin, cut into squares or fingers, leave to cool for 15 minutes then carefully remove to a wire cooling rack.
Store in an airtight tin or box.

Starting to panic!!

It is that time of year when the panic starts to rise and becomes ever more real,

What is it I am panicking about you may be asking!!

THE CHRISTMAS CAKE DESIGN!!

For those of you who are regular guests during the festive period, will know that over the last few years the making of the St Kilda Christmas Cake has been left to me ( I make novelty birthday cakes as a hobby).

I feel very privileged to have this honor, and I actually love doing it, but by this time of year I have made up my mind as to what design the cake will carry. This is where my problem lies do I go down the novelty route as I did last year or the more traditional one that I did the years previously?

The fruit cakes are made, I have done that much and they have been fed with the obligatory booze each week, so are smelling delicious, but design !!!

The pressure is on, cakes need to be marzipaned this week so will need to be cut to size depending on yes you guessed it the design!

My son is a chef in the Army and he was on the phone last night telling me that his cake is well under way, but then his cake has to be judged by the CO, at least I don't have that pressure thank goodness,

just all of you!!

I think its time to do some snooping and see what ideas I can come up with this week

Wales Rally GB 10-13 Nov 2011

The town of Llandudno was alive with rally enthusiasts over the last few days as people turned out to watch the Wales Rally GB hold its stages around the Great Orme. The last time the rally was in Llandudno was 1981 and I can remember it well watching with great excitement as the cars went flying past me.
Unfortunately I did not manage to get out to see them this time due to work commitments!! but I had all the excitement fed back to me from my youngest son who had come home especially to watch it. " Truly Awesome" I think he said.
Conwy County Borough Council are to be congratulated, they worked hard to get the rally back into Llandudno and to close all the roads to keep drivers and spectators safe.

We'll Meet Again Breaks

Our popular We'll Meet Again Breaks have now come to an end until February next year, once again they were a roaring success with our guests who enjoyed the Ration Books that gave them all complimentary extras!! 1940 it may have been but there was no rationing here!!

The fancy dress competition was another great hit and keeps getting more and more competitive each time we hold it!!

If anyone has any photos of the fancy dress costumes and would like to share them with us please email them to me and I will post them on the blog.

Today sees the first day of our Holly & Mistletoe breaks and we are all busy putting up the trimmings, decking the halls with holly and the Christmas trees are being festooned with baubles and twinkling lights, ready for our guests joining us this week.

The mince pies are cooking in the kitchen and the smell that is wafting up into the office is tantalising my nostrils!! I do so love Christmas and I am so glad that I get an extended one working at the St Kilda.

Each year we see the return of familiar faces who are meeting up with family and friends, to enjoy the festive atmosphere and of course we love to welcome all our new guests who have yet to enjoy the spirit of St Kilda.

We have a couple of Congratulations we would like to share with you, as we have some family members that deserve a mention for recently wining awards.

Mr Ken Jones' cousin Alan Jones who runs a family business based in Wrexham.

You may of heard about their business, it is a well known bakery called "The Village Bakery", they had been nominated in several categories in the True Taste of Wales Competition.

Mr Alan Jones along with his son Robin and a party of employees came to stay at the St Kilda Hotel so they could attend the True Taste of Wales Award Ceremony that was held in Llandudno in October.

We are pleased to announce they won the coveted Gold Award for the "Welsh Export Achievement"and we would like to congratulate them on this prestigious award.

The Feast is Back!!

The third largest Food Festival in Wales is back, Gwledd Conwy Feast a two day event held on the 22nd & 23rd of October within the town walls of Conwy and the Quayside.

It is not to be missed!! I have attended every year since it began in 2003 and it is for all you foodies out there. Start your Christmas shopping early or just take it all in and enjoy the ambience, with over 150 stalls there is sure to be something for everyone. The top welsh chefs hold demonstrations, there is music, entertainment and workshops to whet your appetite here is a flavour of what you will find.

The Welsh Celebrity Chefs from The Great Brittish Menu- Bryn Williams, Aled Williams and Hywel Jones will be cooking up a storm in the True Taste of Wales kitchen.

A Champagne and Oyster tent and a 30 mile Cafe where Toby Watson will be creating a delicious three course menu of the best food produced within a 30 mile radius of Conwy.

The popular Beer Tent and Quay Music Stage hostd by a group of local brewers will be open all weekend with bands performing on what promises to be another lively show.

Christmas & New Year Fast Approaching!!

The Countdown to Christmas has begun

So if you haven't already booked your Christmas or New Year break with us you had

better hurry!!

Once again our Christmas break is proving to be very popular with many guests booking last year, before they left!!

Our 4 or 5 night break starts on 23rd or 24th December. The festivities commence as soon as you arrive with a selection of sandwiches and our usual homemade scones. Join us in the Bar at 5.30 to get you in the mood by singing Carols with our Entertainers Dave & Eirian whilst waiting for Father Christmas. He always fits us in before his busy night bringing a gift for everyone before our Christmas Eve Candlelit Dinner.

Christmas Day offers plenty of time to open your stockings before Breakfast but be sure to leave plenty of room for Buck's Fizz and a Gourmet Christmas Lunch served with all the trimmings and much, much more. In the evening a Candlelit Dinner followed by an evening of Entertainment.

After breakfast on Boxing Day you could take the Traditional Sponsored Boxing Day Dip in aid of St David's Hospice but if you are not brave enough, join us for Coffee and mince pies straight from the oven. Lunch is served at 12.30pm followed by our treat, a trip up the Orme to the Toboggan Run and if you don't fancy that just come along for the magnificent views and a coffee in the Ski Lodge. We have the Famous Yuletide Buffet served by our Chefs to look forward to in the evening.

On the 27th after breakfast and then lunch, enjoy our Winter Wonderland Trip a Luxury coach tour around beautiful North Wales. Back in time to change for your Candlelit dinner and another evening of entertainment.

New Year

New Year is such a lovely time in the Hotel, stay for 2 or 3 nights and enjoy a memorable start to the New Year. Celebrations start as with Christmas on arrival with Tea, sandwiches cakes and scones. In the evening of the 30th a 6 course Candlelit Dinner and an evening of fabulous entertainment.

During the day on New Years Eve enjoy coffee in the lounge after breakfast but don't get to full as you have a lunchtime special prepared by our chefs then the New Year's Eve Festive Dinner all 7 Courses! A superb evening of Entertainment follows taking us well into the New Year when we will enjoy toasting the New Year with Champagne to the chimes of Big Ben.

Breakfast is served later on New Year's Day giving you a chance to have a lie in, but breakfast is to small a word for it we like to call it Brunch and it will certainly set you up for the day!

Join us in the Bar for Bucks Fizz to celebrate the New Year and then enjoy a Finger Buffet for lunch. Another 6 course Candlelit dinner and entertainment follows in the evening.

I don't know about you, but it does sound good to me !! I cant wait all this talk about Christmas and New Year has made me think I had better start writing my lists and getting organised, how many days do I have left???

Our Head Chef

Please meet Ken, our Head Chef at the St Kilda.

Ken has worked at the St Kilda for 11 years and has a team of 3 chefs working alongside him. He loves to try new recipes and can be found in the kitchen when everyone else has gone home trying out something new, and if we are lucky we sometimes get to sample these dishes (perks of the job Mmm).

Ken loves Christmas!! he does the usual moaning and groaning that chefs do, but we all know that this is the best time for him to show of his culinary skills. He produces the best buffets I have seen, the attention to detail and the presentation of the platters are second to none.
If you have experienced a St Kilda Christmas I am sure you would agree with me, if not then be sure to book one soon!

Just look what you are missing!

Ken has had a very busy personal life this year planning his wedding, and I am glad to say it all went to plan, he and Janet were married in July and had a truly wonderful day.

He was also very proud to announce recently the birth of his first grand child a beautiful little girl called Lola May, who I am sure will be the apple of his eye! Both Mum and baby are doing well.

In between his busy family life and working, Ken tries to relax by going fishing he is a very keen Carp fisherman and often calls into my office asking me to check what the weather forecast will be for his days off. After his fishing trip we often discuss how he got on, how many fish he caught, the weight of the catch etc, it's a shame we have to work really we could ramble on about our fisherman's tales all day long.........

Our Front of House and Operations Manager

Hi, my name is Suzanne Warren, I am the Front of House and Operations Manager at the St Kilda Hotel.

I have worked for Mr & Mrs Jones for 6 years and boy how those years have flown!

The best part of my job is meeting such a variety of people from all walks of life, and ensuring there stay is a happy and memorable one. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than to see a guest return again and again, knowing them by name and greeting them on reception as they walk in the door is a pleasure to both them and myself.

This year I have been kept busy helping with the planning and organising of the refurbishments in the hotel.This started back in January when we were closed for 2 weeks all the ground floor carpets were replaced, this was followed by decorating of the Commodore Dining room, then a Luxury Bay room and numerous other bedrooms have followed. It has been a mammoth job a bit like building the Forth Bridge you just keep going and going.

I am also decorating my home and planning my wedding for the end of the year, so there is not a lot of time to do anything else at the moment, but I do love taking my dog Jet for long walks in the country with my partner Richard.

I nearly forgot! Richard is training for a charity bike ride from Lands End to John O' Groats and has asked for my help! So if you are around the Chester area at any time watch out for me on my bike!!

Time to Celebrate!

All the staff gathered today for a small celebration, to toast our success at the recent "Group Travel Awards".

To achieve the award three times in succession, recognises the dedication and hard work that Mr & Mrs Jones have put into the hotel over the last 23 years.

All the departments in the hotel must be congratulated, as guests receive the same friendly service from the reception staff who meet and greet, to the houskeepers keeping all bedrooms and other areas of the hotel spick and span, the bar staff who keep the drinks flowing whilst the entertainers perform their fabulous acts.

I cannot forget the Waiters and Waiterreses who work extremely hard to ensure, guests recieve their meals with a smile, the staff who work behind the scenes and if I dont mention the Chefs I wont eat for a week!!

We all enjoyed the break in routine to stop and gather in the dining room to have a few nibbles, a glass of Champagne, followed by a slice of cake of course! It was very apparent that each and everyone of us, are extremely proud to be part of this fantastic team, becoming the "Best Individual Hotel for Groups" in Great Britain and we are all now very busy planning what we need to do to win in 2012.

Mr & Mrs Jones kindly presented each member of staff with a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift to mark the celebration.

The blue skies above the bay make it look just like a picture postcard, now I don't profess to be a David Bailey but I did bring my camera to work today, and have taken a few snapshots for you.

The Day of the Awards

It was a lovely sunny day as Mrs. Jones, Julia and I set off from Llandudno station to the Group Travel Organiser Award Ceremony in London. Suzanne was to join us en-route at Chester. We had all been looking forward to this day and the Gala Evening that lay ahead and as we arrived at Chester Station, our eyes were peeled for Suzanne. We tried frantically to spot her in the crowds but the train pulled away without her, or so we thought.

Where was she?

We urgently tried to contact her but no answer! As we tried to rethink the logistics on how she could join us later, in she walked as large as life and as cool as a cucumber. She had got on the train at the very end carriage, and slowly fought her way threw the crowds to find us, No Rush! How relieved we three were.

We finally made it into London Euston altogether, then across the city to the Riverbank Plaza Hotel where the ceremony was being held. A quick change into our frocks and with our hair and make up done it was down to reception for a glass of wine before dinner.

It was a very special evening, the ballroom looked amazing with “Phantom of the Opera” being the theme for the décor and entertainment. In the centre of the tables there were flowers topped with masks and streamers and balloons everywhere. The meal was delicious, but as the awards began nerve racking is an understatement!!

To make it worse we had to wait until after the interval as our category was number 12. We were one of seven finalists and at this point I felt sick!! They announced the Runner Up and then they announced US….

Oh my goodness, we’d done it, we’d got the Hat trick!

Welcome to the St Kilda Hotel Weblog!

Hi my name is Pam, I am the Group Marketing Manager and I would like to bring the St Kilda up to date with Social Networking. My aim is to give you more of an insight into what is happening in the hotel each week, with features on our staff, recipes from our chefs (if they will part with them), our refurbishment programme, our awards and much much more I hope!
