Auction Winner

 We look forward to welcoming the winner of the Brain Tumour Charity Auction

 that was held recently by the Timperley based "Thirty Three". 

The group raised a massive £800 for this fabulous charity, June Everton who nominated the event is a regular visitor to the St Kilda along with her Husband John. Each January they bring a large group of family and friends to "Blow away the Cobwebs" and have a marvelous time.

We would like to congratulate them on the success of the event.

We'll Meet Again Break

Our 1940's We'll Meet Again Breaks have just finished for the year and have been extremely popular. Below is a photo of some of our guests all dressed up and ready for the Fancy Dress Parade after dinner. Our next breaks will be during the month of February so if you would like to join in the fun please don't leave it too late to book.

We know our staff are great!! and do a fabulous job so we thought it would be rather nice if we launched a Staff Award Scheme. This allows our guests to nominate who they think deserves some extra recognition for going that extra mile. This has proved very popular with guests and of course our staff, each month the nominations come in and are counted, the person with the most nominations then receives an award and a certificate as the Employee of the Month

On my way into work today, I passed a neighbour as I do most days. This neighbour has a red and white truck parked in his drive, I have known for years that he is the Punch and Judy man but it was only the other day whilst strolling along the promenade that I actually saw him.

Jason Codman Millband took over the Puppet Show in 2008, he is the fifth generation of the family to run it. He relies totally on audience donations and sales of Punch and Judy souvenirs which he sells from his red and white exhibition trailer between each show.

The Llandudno Punch and Judy show is the longest running puppet show in Britain, founded by Richard Codman in 1860. Originally it was near the Empire Hotel but in 1864 after performing for the Mostyn Estates he was given a pitch on the promenade near to the entrance of the pier.

We’ll Meet Again!!

I recently had a very interesting conversation with one of our guests, he had heard that we run a “We’ll Meet Again Break” out of season. The gentleman, Mr Jim Wright informed me that he had been researching all about the “Evacuees” of W.W.2. His research had taken him all around the country, to meet people and find out firsthand what it had been like to be an evacuee in these different areas. He himself was an evacuee, which spurned his passion to find out as much as he could. Trawling through record offices for any little bit of information in order to compile his findings.

I also found out that there is a Bi –Monthly magazine “The Evacuee”. This a really lovely magazine for anyone interested in the subject of the great British children and others during the Second World War. The magazine is run by ERA, Evacuees Reunion Association which is a voluntary organisation and membership is open to anyone the annual subscription is £20 and the Evacuee is sent to you at no extra cost.

Llandudno also has a “Home Front” visitor centre/museum, this unique living history museum, take a self guided tour and explore 6 years of war on the home front captured in shops, room displays and tableaux.

Shhh Don’t tell the Boss!

I am not sure if any of you know but I actually breed and exhibit rabbits, in particular the breeds Ivory Satins and Sables. I have kept both breeds for many years with varying success. During the autumn and winter weekends I will be driving around the country visiting shows to exhibit my stock.

Sometimes I will get a Red Card which is a 1^st in the breed class and if I am very lucky the rabbit would go on to win Best Fur or even Best in Show. But it all starts from the breeding stock, early in spring I decide which pairings to make, based on the previous success I may have or not had.

The does have their litters approx 31 days later and the size of the litter can range from 1-14 but the average is about 6. The youngsters are left with their mums for approx 6-8 weeks until they are fully weaned and can then be taken to a new hutch of their own. I leave them together for approx 2-3 weeks and then separate them again buy this time I have probably got my eye on one or two show rabbits!

Last week though I had a disaster, a doe with 6 youngsters who were all doing well and about 10 days old, suddenly died leaving them as orphans. They would never survive on their own so I decided I had to try my utmost to save them. Never in all my years keeping rabbits had I attempted this before!! The outcome is usually bad as they are notoriously difficult to hand rear.

To be in with a chance they needed feeding 3 times a day but with working how could I manage that middle feed? What else could I do? Of course I had to bring them into work and feed them at lunch time, nobody would know!!

Well you guessed it everyone knew and they all wanted a peep, never had so many visitors to my office!! Lots of ohhing and ahhing going on. There is no guarantee they will live which is a shame but I will give it my best shot.

Honey Bees in further decline!

This launch comes as further declines in the honey bee population have been announced. While the figures are falling it is encouraging to see that many people would like to help, but just don’t know how!!

With this in mind the Beekeepers Association has launched a campaign and hope that many of you will support it “Friends of the Honey Bee” focuses on what individuals can do to help the plight.

This is a campaign close to my heart as my husband and I are avid beekeepers and look after 8 hives. There is no need for you to become a beekeeper (unless you want too) but there are many ways in which you can help. There is a Winnie-the- Pooh inspired pack which is available in a printed form and can be downloaded here http://www.friendsofthehoneybee.com/about/bee-friendly-with-winnie-the-pooh/. Or follow the 10 simple steps listed below.

Winnie-the-Pooh’s 10 simple steps to help save the honey bees

1. Plant your own window box

2. Create your own vegetable patch or tub

3. Plant a flowering tree in your garden

4. Make some ‘seed balls’ and throw them into the wild

5. Use arts and crafts to educate the younger generation on the importance of bees e.g. finger puppets, painting bee pictures, knitting bees etc

6. Learn to become a beekeeper yourself by attending a course through the British Beekeepers Association

7. Bake together at home using local honey

8. Build bee habitats

9. Volunteer for your local beekeeper association or visit your local apiary

10. Don’t panic, if you see a local honey bee swarm, contact your local beekeeping association

St Kilda is also doing their bit too! And already have their patio garden beds and tubs planted up

Let’s all do a little and help save the Honey Bee!!

Group Travel Awards 2015

Having been crowned the Winner of the Best Individual Hotel for Groups, 6 years in succession 2009-2014 we proudly accepted the "Runner Up" trophy in 2015.

GTO Winner Again!!

We Did it again!!!

For the 6th year in succession we have won the Best Individual Hotel for Groups Award which is run by the Group Travel Organiser magazine. We would like to thank all the Group Organisers and Coach Operators who voted for us. A special thanks also goes to our fabulous team of dedicated staff who are the backbone of the hotel. Extravaganza!!

I came accross this lovely image of Llandudno not sure when it was taken but you can just make out the St Kilda Hotel in the background. It also reminded me that I needed to tell you about Llandudno's Victorian Extravaganza a weekend of celebration in the town which always falls on the first weekend in May.

Pipes and Drums

At the beginning of this month we were delighted to once again welcome J H Coaches of Bolton back to the St Kilda Hotel. John Hood, organiser, and Ron Andrew, courier brought a lovely group to stay with us; and spring was well and truly underway, with dry days and glorious sunshine all round.

During their stay we got talking to the two lovely gents and found out some rather interesting things. Close friends for nearly 30 years, they originally met in the Royal Artillery Association. John and Ron's late wife convinced him to join the Bolton Scottish Pipes and Drums. It's Lucky he let himself be persuaded, as he and John were able to enjoy 15 years together in the band. While Ron was a Drum Major, John was a Tenor and Bass Drummer. At the age of 74, Ron decided to retire; John however, continues to play for the Bolton Caledonian Pipe Band to this day.

Today, Ron and John spend much of their time working for J H Coaches, work that takes them up and down the country. Ron also finds time to do much valuable charity work: he tends to the upkeep of War Graves and lays wreaths and crosses for Remembrance Day. He also works for SSAFA - a wonderful charity that provides support and assistance to servicemen, veterans, and their families. He has recently raised £8,000 - making him the Number One SSAFA fund raiser in his region. Congratulations Ron!

Calling Time!!
This lovely photo reminded me that it was time to update our blog, it has been a while since i wrote to you and hopefully now it will be on a more regular basis.

The weather has had an impact on a lot of businesses all over the country but here in Llandudno we have been extremely lucky. The Ormes on both side of the bays do help to shelter us from the storms.

Before we know it it will be Easter, how time flies!! We are all really looking forward to the spring and there are signs it is happening everywhere you go. The verges on the sides of the roads leading into Llandudno are full of daffodils, and cheer me up coming into work everyday. Days are getting longer and you can hear the birds singing, even the woodpeckers in the woods near where I live can be heard drilling the trees.
